The Ellesmere Port docks line seen in 2004. Compare this to the previous shot showing the current track alignment. The line at the bottom left is the remains of the compound where the MSC sentinel's were kept. Ellesmere Port docks line before it re-opened, heading underneath the M53 motorway bridge towards the connection near Ellesmere Port station 2004 Mouldsworth Jct with the former line to West Cheshire Jct going off to the right which was removed in 2000 but the junction trackwork here remained until complete removal in 2005 along with the signal box in 2006. The single line between West Cheshire Jct & Mouldsworth was lifted in 2000 but this semaphore signal still remains just outside Mouldsworth Jct 2004 Sentinel shunter currently in use at Mostyn docks 2005. Mostyn docks shunter No1 seen languishing out of use in 2005. In March 2008 this loco was cut up on site. Former Manchester ship canal railway bridge still in situe at Moore lane 2006. Former Manchester ship canal railway which ran parallel to the canal at this point at Moore lane 2006. Manchester ship canal shunters from left to right Sentinel DH26 built 1965 (recently preserved at Bowes rly), Ruston MSC1 'Emily' & hired ex BR class 08 08873 at Barton dock road, Trafford park 2006 Bridge over the Bridgewater canal carrying the disused line into Trafford park estate 2006 Disused line around Trafford park estate 2006. The maze of tracks around Trafford park still exist and in parts are still in relatively good condition 2006. Hudswell Clarke locomotives 4002 (built 1959, preserved at the ELR) D6 (built 1960) & D2 (built 1960) at Barton dock road depot 05/03/88 TE Ship canal sentinel 3003 (built 1963) stood Ellesmere port 15/10/87. Also of note is the MSC brake van which I believe is now preserved. TE D2, D6 & 4002 stabled at Barton dock road depot 05/03/88 TE MSC sentinel 3001 (built 1963) stabled on the steadily decaying rail system at Ellesmere Port docks 20/07/96 MSC brakevan used on oil trains between Ellesmere Port & Eastham refinery 15/10/87 Part of the original MSC railway still in situe near Randles sluices between the ship canal & the river Mersey opposite Fiddlers ferry 18/06/07 Ship canal sentinel shunters 3001 & 3005 (both built 1963) stood at Ellesmere Port shortly before rail operations finished here at the docks 20/07/96 MSC Shunters 3004 (built 1963) along with 3001 & 3005 on the right at Ellesmere Port docks 20/07/96. At this time rail operations had just about finished here at the docks and the shunters were left discarded out in the open until eventually being sold on or scrapped This was the maintenance shed for the sentinel shunters up until rail operations finished here in 1996. 27/01/08 The shed is used to store vehicles used on the docks today but has still retained the locomotive inspection pit inside 27/01/08 The line from Ellesmere Port to Eastham refinery is still connected and in relatively good condition 27/01/08 The disused line to Eastham refinery 27/01/08 Just before Eastham refinery the line splits into a loop 27/01/08 The mothballed Birkenhead docks line seen cutting underneath the town. 27/01/08 The mothballed Birkenhead docks branch close to Canning Street Jct. The remaining single line can still be seen in the trees 27/01/08 Derilict Canning Street North signal box still remains after 15 years since closure. The crossing has since be tarmaced over however most of the branch has been protected for possible future use 27/01/08 Birkenhead Docks branch looking west towards Birkenhead North & Bidston 27/01/08 Despite its appalling state, Canning Street North signal box survives and is technically still connected to the mothballed Birkenhead docks branch owned by Network rail 27/01/08 Semaphore signal still in situe on the approach to Canning Street North signal box & crossing 27/01/08 Carterhouse Jct signal box seen on 16/09/06. This box has been switched out since the mid 90s but was only formerly disconnected in dec 2006 and finally demolished in 2007. At the same location as the previous photograph of sentinel 3004 only 15 years later. This line was re-instated to Manisty wharf in 2005 in carry imported coal by rail to Fiddlers Ferry. 02/02/08 Just beyond the points are where sentinel's 3001 & 3005 were stood on one of the previous photographs. 02/02/08 Since the line to Manisty wharf was re-instated in 2005, this line to the former Cawoods export terminal has become disconnected after the coal traffic from south Wales finished in the early 90s 02/02/08 The only line now in operation at Ellesmere Port. This continues through the dock estate to Manisty wharf where coal is loaded. The disconnected line to the right went to the former Cawoods coal terminal. Just visible on the left is whats left of the compound where the MSC Sentinel shunters were kept until the whole site was abandoned in 1996. 02/02/08 The entrance to the disused Cawoods coal container terminel at Ellesmere Port 02/02/08 MSC 4001 built in 1959 & originally named 'Alnwick Castle' seen outside Winfields outdoor shop at Haslingden on a short piece of track. This locomotive is the sister to 4002 currently preserved a few miles away at the East Lancashire railway 09/02/08 Former Penrhyn railway engine shed still standing on the dockside 26/03/08 A small section of track remains of the Holyhead breakwater railway which was closed in 1980. 26/03/08 The former engine shed of the Holyhead breakwater railway where the BR class 01 shunters were based until their demise in 1980. 26/03/08 River bridge just north of Llangefni on the Amlwch branch 26/03/08 The disused Amlwch branch which was closed in 1993 showing how parts of the line are now heavily covered in vegetation 26/03/08.
